What is the difference between black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide?

Difference between Black & Green SiC

Silicon carbide is divided into black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, which are widely used in metallurgical industry, mechanical industry and petrochemical industry, but do you know what are the differences between black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide? As a famous silicon carbide manufacturer in China, HSA (Henan Superior Abrasive) would like to popularize the difference between black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide.

Difference between Black & Green SiC

There are two basic varieties of silicon carbide, black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, both are α-SiC. green silicon carbide is basically the same as black silicon carbide, only the raw material and manufacturing process are different, the product is green translucent body, hardness and purity is better than black silicon carbide.

Its coefficient of elasticity reaches 410 GPa, and it does not dissolve at room temperature and pressure, and it is only depleted at temperatures above 1600°C and decomposes at 2815.5°C.

Black SiC

Black silicon carbide contains about 98.5% SiC, its toughness is higher than green silicon carbide, mostly used for processing materials with low tensile strength, such as glass, ceramics, stone, refractory materials, cast iron and non-ferrous metals.

Black silicon carbide is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke and high quality silica as the main raw material, smelted by resistance furnace at high temperature. Its hardness is between corundum and diamond, mechanical strength is higher than corundum, brittle and sharp.

Green SiC

Green silicon carbide contains more than 99% SiC, good self-sharpening, mostly used for processing carbide, titanium alloy and optical glass, also used for honing cylinder liner and fine grinding high-speed steel tools. In addition, there is cubic silicon carbide, it is a special process to produce yellow-green crystals, used to make abrasives suitable for bearing ultra-fine machining, can make the surface roughness from Ra32 ~ 0.16 microns to Ra0.04 ~ 0.02 microns at a time.

Green silicon carbide chemical coefficient: due to its stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, low coefficient of thermal expansion and good wear resistance, it has many other uses besides abrasives; the advanced refractory materials made of it are heat resistant, small in size, light in weight and high in strength, and have good energy-saving effects.

Green silicon carbide is suitable for grinding copper, brass, aluminum, gemstones, optical glass, ceramics and other hard alloys, metals and hard and brittle non-metallic materials. Its micronized powder can also be used as ceramic material. Due to its high purity, black silicon carbide is also widely used in refractory materials and various abrasive tool manufacturing.

Silicon Carbide Manufacturer

Henan Superior Abrasives (HSA) is a professional manufacturer of silicon carbide, in line with the principle of “customer first, integrity first”, has established long-term cooperative relations with many enterprises.

HSA’s portfolio includes a variety of Silicon Carbide products, such as Black Silicon Carbide, available as Macro Grits and Micro Powder, and Green Silicon Carbide, also available as Macro Grits and Micro Powder. In addition, we offer other abrasive materials, such as White Fused Alumina, Brown Fused Alumina, and Boron Carbide. These products find extensive applications in abrasives, refractory materials, functional ceramics, and metallurgical raw materials.
