Anvendelse

The only synthesis of silicon and carbon is silicon carbide (Sic), commonly known as adamantine. SiC occurs in nature in the form of the mineral silica carbide, but is very rare. Imidlertid, since 1893, powdered silicon carbide has been produced in large quantities for use as an abrasive. Silicon carbide has been used as an abrasive for more than 100 years, primarily in grinding wheels and numerous other grinding applications.

There are currently four main applications for silicon carbide, namely: functional ceramics, advanced refractories, abrasives og metallurgical raw materials.
